How to Choose a Tug

All of our tugs are completely customizable. You choose the material, the color, the shape, the length and the add ons. So, what does all this mean? 

Basically it comes down to what your dog likes! Look at some of your dog's favorite toys and go from there. Does your dog destroy plastic toys in .02 seconds? Your dog probably has a hard bite. Likewise, if instead your dog's plastic toys barely have teeth marks in them, chances are your dog has a soft bite. Those two pieces of information will help you to create a great tug toy customized for your dog.

The Material

Rope or Fleece - Rope is more durable but is harder to bite on than fleece. If your dog generally likes toys made out of plastic, a rope tug would be a good choice. If your dog generally likes soft toys, you are probably better off with fleece.

The Colors

Rope comes in 11 colors - Red, Black, Green, White, Teal, Pink, Fuschia, Yellow, Orange, Blue and Purple. The rope is 1/4" thick but we're looking at stocking 1/2" thickness in most of those colors as well.

Fleece comes in all of those colors plus hundreds of additional colors and prints. Only 11 colors are listed because seeing 250 choices would be overwhelming. Know that you can have fleece in just about any color or print you'd like. If you want teddy bear fleece, I will get teddy bear fleece and make you a tug! 

The Shape

Round tugs are a little looser than square tugs. Use the recommendations listed under materials to get an idea on which shape would best suit your dog.

The Length

Tugs come standard in long and short. This option is your preference more than the dog's. Do you want to drag it behind you as you run away? You would need a long tug to do this. Or would you prefer to tug with your dog directly in front of you? A short tug would serve you better in that case.

Add Ons

There are a number of things we can add on to the tug:

Milkie - a rubber item used in cow milking machines. All of our milkies are "used" and have a unique cow scent to them. It's not strong enough to bother you but intensely interesting to the dog! (Don't worry, we boil all of the cow parts before adding them to a tug!)

Tennis Balls - a normal tennis ball that any ball crazy dog would flip over.

Hockey Balls - a hard plastic ball used in street hockey. These are used for ball-motivated dogs with a strong bite. Available colors are Hot Pink, Orange & Glow-in-the-Dark white. We buy our hockey balls directly from Mylec, one of the leading companies in hockey equipment.

Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Ball - a really durable rubber ball in the shape of a tennis ball. This is one of the longest lasting balls in existence! PD Orbee Tuff balls look like tennis balls but last so much longer than a standard tennis ball. Available colors are Pink & Yellow but we can special order other Planet Dog balls by request.

Rabbit Fur - kick your dog's prey instinct into high gear with the addition of rabbit fur!! Most dogs go absolutely bananas over the addition to of fur, increasing their drive to play/tug.

Other Options

We are always coming up with other things to add to the end of a tug - Kongs, tubing, anything that interests a dog. If you'd like something that isn't listed, let us know and we can make it!
